Rules of the Road – What Paddlers Need to Know

Canoeing, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, rafting, and rescue crafts are fun and rewarding ways to enjoy the water, but sharing waterways safely requires knowledge and awareness. The American Canoe Association (ACA) provides guidance to help paddlers navigate responsibly.

Paddling offers so much to so many: quiet leisure, intense adrenaline, and a path to exploration and adventure. It’s a great way to experience nature, enjoy reflective moments, and spend time with family and friends away from the distractions of everyday life.

Occasionally, conflicts arise between different boating groups due to craft size, operator training, maneuverability, geographic constraints, and the number of users on the water. Paddlers should be aware of a few “Rules of the Road” when sharing waterways: keep a proper lookout, and be courteous to other boaters and law enforcement — they’re there to help you stay safe and have fun.
