How to Create a Rain Garden
As urbanized areas grew and replaced forests and wetlands, so did impervious surfaces like asphalt. Water cannot be absorbed through these types of surfaces, so the resultant runoff enters storm sewers and can carry pollutants from streets, parking lots and even lawns into our local streams and rivers, and ultimately, our lakes.
Rain gardens are a sustainable, easy way that homeowners can help to manage rainfall and snowmelt, and improve water quality. They are landscaped areas planted with wildflowers and other native vegetation that temporarily retain stormwater runoff from our roofs, roads and lawns.
