Protecting, Enhancing, and Connecting the Fox Waterway
The Fox Waterway Agency exists to protect and enhance the Fox River and Chain O’Lakes as a shared public resource. Our work focuses on maintaining safe and enjoyable recreational waterways, restoring and protecting environmental quality, reducing flood risks, supporting tourism, and improving the overall quality of life for everyone who lives, works, and plays along the waterway.
FWA is a unit of local government established under Illinois law to manage and maintain the Fox River and Chain O’Lakes waterway system. Our jurisdiction spans the 15 interconnected lakes of the Fox River Chain O’Lakes and more than 30 miles of the Fox River, from the Wisconsin state line to the Algonquin Dam, along with their tributaries and over 40 miles of navigable channels.
While our direct authority is limited to the waterway itself, we collaborate closely with local landowners, community organizations, and government agencies to support land-based projects that impact the health, safety, and sustainability of the waterway.
